How Car Manufacturers Are Adapting Their Fleet Into Electric

UK law changes are influencing car manufactures behaviour

With the 2030 ban on non-EV vehicles being brought into force, see how major car manufacturers are trying to get ahead of the curve,

Fiat

Fiat plans to drop Internal Combustion Engine (ICE) vehicles from the Uk market by July this year and drop hybrid vehicles by 2027.

One of Fiat’s most famous and best-selling cars, the 500, is now fully electric with no hybid/petrol powered new models produced. It is the best-selling electric city car in eleven countries and it is in great part thanks to the success of this that lead Fiat to speeding up their EV plans.

Vauxhall

Vauxhall recently announced it plans to go full electric in the UK two years before the 2030 cut off date.

Paul Willcox, Managing Director, Vauxhall Motors, said “As of 2028, Vauxhall will only offer fully electric cars and vans in the UK.  The future of the automotive industry is electric – and Vauxhall will lead that in this country.

They already offer an electric option across all their entire van range – a move that has seen them become the UK’s number one electric van manufacturer. Their range of cars will follow suit in having a fully electric option by 2024.

Nissan

Spearheaded by the £1.3bn ‘gigafactory’ plans in Sunderland, Nissan will invest £13.2bn into vehicle electrification over five years with 23 electrified models already in the works.

They have announced no specific plans for the UK market but has committed to phasing out fossil-fuel cars by 2040, alongside GM and Ford.

Volkswagen Group

VW, which includes other car brands such as Audi, Bentley, Lamborgini, Porsche, Seat and Skoda has announced it aims for a quarter of sales to be electric by 2026.

VW’s Ralf Brandstätter (then chief operating officer, now CEO) said: ‘2020 was a turning point for Volkswagen and marked a breakthrough in electric mobility. We are well on track to achieve our aim of becoming the market leader in battery electric vehicles.’
