Goodwood Festival of Speed lived up to it’s high expectations, the event was a sell out once again as crowds rushed to West Sussex to witness the best of the motoring world.
Former F1 World Champions Damon Hill, Nigel Mansell and Mikka Hakkinen as well as current Mercedes driver George Russell, all took on the course in Formula One cars from the past and present.
EV Smashes the All-Time Hillclimb Record
A full electric “fan car” has beaten the all time course record for the Goodwood Hillclimb by almost a second. The McMurty Speirling fan car driven by former F1 and Indy Car driver, Max Chilton, clocked in at 39.08 seconds – beating the previous record of 39.9 seconds.
The fully electric power train was aided by the “fan car” design, first seen in the 1970s – most notably with the race-winning Brabham F1 car in 1978. Fan cars work by having extremely low side skirts and a fan installed on the underside of the car. This creates a vacuum which sucks the car to the floor creating over 2,000kg of downforce – over twice the weight of the EV.
Lucid Debuts EV with 500 Mile Range
Manufactured in San Francisco, California, the Lucid Air GTP has been branded the most powerful EV in all of North America. The new model produces 10355bhp – around 30% more than Max Verstappen’s Formula One WDC winning RB16.
Not only can the Air GTP boast about it’s superb range but it can also charge at 350kW, which Lucid claim can add 300 miles in just 21 minutes.
‘Electric Avenue’ Returns
After a brief absence due to Covid, Electric Avenue made a comeback, carrying on its aim to make electric mobility uniquely accessible to everyone. The area showcased thirty EV for attendees to look at, including British Volt’s concept paddock displaying the future of EV travel. There was also an Information Hub ran by AA and bp pulse experts giving talks on what it is like to own an EV.
There was also ‘Electric Only’ test drives on the Friday where attendees could book to take the latest Ford, Renault and BMW’s for a drive on Goodwood’s Motor Circuit.
